NetSuite AI in 2026: every option, what it costs, and where to start
In short
NetSuite AI is any use of AI models with Oracle NetSuite. As of NetSuite 2026.2 (September 2026), it comes in four forms:
- NetSuite’s own AI features (Text Enhance, Narrative Insights, Ask Oracle, NetSuite Next) run inside NetSuite. The generative ones consume NetSuite AI Units, and some are on by default.
- External assistants via the NetSuite AI Connector Service, Oracle’s official MCP (Model Context Protocol) server: Claude, ChatGPT and other clients use your data under a NetSuite role. The connector is free; your AI client may need a paid plan.
- AI coding agents (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Cline) write SuiteScript and SDF (SuiteCloud Development Framework) projects, helped by Oracle’s Agent Skills, plug-ins and Developer Assistant.
- AI inside your scripts: the N/llm module (consumes AI Units) and custom MCP tools for the AI Connector.
Where to start, for most companies: check which native features are already on and drawing AI Units, then pilot one job in a sandbox with a non-Administrator role, read-only if possible, with auditing on.
Who this is for
The NetSuite administrator whose CFO just asked “what should we do with AI on NetSuite?”, plus developers, finance users and decision makers.
What you need
- An Administrator to change settings, and a separate non-Administrator role for any AI connection: the connector refuses the Administrator role.
- A sandbox if you have one (a paid add-on, with its own AI Units pool). Without one, pilot in production with a read-only role and a few named users.
The four ways to use AI with NetSuite
| Way | What it looks like | Where the model runs | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. NetSuite’s own AI | Text Enhance, Narrative Insights, Ask Oracle inside NetSuite | Models chosen by Oracle: Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Generative AI, and OpenAI for some features such as Transaction Matching Assistant | Included AI Units, then paid packs |
| 2. External assistant via the AI Connector | Claude or ChatGPT answers on live NetSuite data | Your AI provider | Connector free; AI client plan |
| 3. AI coding agents | An agent writes SuiteScript and SDF files | Your coding tool’s provider | Your tool’s plan |
| 4. AI inside your scripts | N/llm calls, or your own MCP tools | Oracle (N/llm); the external client (tools) | N/llm uses AI Units |
1. NetSuite’s own AI features
The 2026.2 headline is Ask Oracle, a conversational assistant that answers from your records, reports and saved searches. It comes with NetSuite Next and as a companion in today’s interface, in the US and Canada first. See Every AI feature in NetSuite 2026.2.
Watch it: Sarah Muha (RSM), NetSuite Next: Full Demo Walkthrough shows Ask Oracle, a canvas and Narrative Insights.
2. An external assistant through the AI Connector
The NetSuite AI Connector Service is Oracle’s hosted MCP server, one per account, announced on August 12, 2025. MCP is an open standard that lets an AI assistant call tools in another system.
Its free MCP Standard Tools SuiteApp has 14 tools for reports, saved searches, records and read-only SuiteQL (NetSuite’s SQL query language); two write, none deletes. Each account has its own address:
https://<accountid>.suitetalk.api.netsuite.com/services/mcp/v1/suiteapp/com.netsuite.mcpstandardtools
https://<accountid>.suitetalk.api.netsuite.com/services/mcp/v1/all
The first returns the standard tools; /all adds your custom tools. Copy your domain from Setup > Company > Company Information, Company URLs subtab: in a sandbox, an ID like 123456_SB1 appears as 123456-sb1. Setup: Connect NetSuite to Claude, ChatGPT and other clients.
Watch it: Claude builds an intercompany vs trade payables split no saved search covered (Rand Group, MCP webinar). In Oracle’s EALgreen customer demo, Claude writes a photographed snowblower into on-hand inventory (SuiteConnect San Francisco keynote).
3. AI coding agents
Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or Cline edit SuiteScript and SDF projects; the SuiteCloud CLI (command-line interface) deploys them. Oracle’s SuiteCloud Developer Assistant best practices say to use separate auth IDs per environment and never deploy generated code straight to production. See AI-assisted SuiteScript and SDF development.
4. AI inside your own scripts
N/llm lets server-side SuiteScript 2.1 call Oracle-hosted models (Cohere Command A by default, Cohere Command A Vision, OpenAI GPT-OSS 120b); every request sent to the model consumes AI Units. See N/llm in 2026.2.
Custom MCP tools go the other way: Custom Tool scripts, deployed with the SDF toolset object, that the connector exposes to assistants. See Build a custom MCP tool.
Which NetSuite AI for which job
| Job | Way | Where available | Cost line | Changes records? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ask questions about your numbers | 1: Ask Oracle | US and Canada, phased | AI Units (about 10 to 200 per question) | May pause for approval before changing data |
| The same, from Claude or ChatGPT | 2: AI Connector | No region limit in Oracle’s docs | AI client plan | Two tools create or update, if the role allows |
| Improve or translate text in records | 1: Text Enhance | All regions since August 2026 | AI Units (5 to 10 for a rewording) | Drafts text in the field you edit |
| Capture vendor bills from PDFs or email | 1: Bill Capture | United States only, limited accounts | Add-on module; no AI Units | Creates vendor bills |
| Flag unusual transactions | 1: Exception Management (machine learning) | Limited release | Not stated by Oracle | No, it flags |
| Match bank transactions | 1: Transaction Matching Assistant (uses OpenAI) | Eligible NetSuite Next accounts | AI Units (5 to 10 in Oracle’s example) | Recommends; never auto-submits |
| Write, review or migrate scripts | 3: coding agent with Oracle’s skills | Any SDF project | Your tool’s plan | Deploys code with the auth ID’s role |
| Document your customizations | 3: coding agent with Oracle’s netsuite-sdf-project-documentation skill |
Any SDF project | Your tool’s plan | No, it reads the project |
| Automate a step inside NetSuite | 4: N/llm or Prompt Studio | All regions since August 2026 | AI Units (5 to 25 for an email draft) | Whatever the script writes |

Seen in practice: Ask Oracle or Claude? Oracle’s NetSuite Next FAQ says the connector “works alongside Ask Oracle”, and Rand Group says many organizations may eventually use both (Rand Group, MCP webinar).
True Protein moved to the connector to use large language models “as quickly as possible”, its Chief Financial and Operations Officer, Lachlan Cornwell, told Scale100. NetSuite Next was not yet available in Australia; he had not tried it but expects it may do better on line-by-line general ledger work.
NetSuite AI pricing: what is free and what uses AI Units
Oracle publishes no AI Unit prices. There are three cost lines.
1. The connector is free. Oracle says the AI Connector Service “is not a paid feature and the MCP Standard Tools is a free SuiteApp”, and that it “will not consume AI Units”.
Seen in practice: Scale100 says the connector saves no NetSuite licenses: every person using it still needs their own (dashboard in two prompts). Oracle’s connector FAQ says queries run under your NetSuite role but does not mention licenses.
2. Your AI client may need a paid plan. Oracle names Claude Pro or higher; Anthropic allows one custom connector on its Free plan. For company-wide control, Claude Team and Enterprise owners can limit connector actions, and ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu admins get per-action control.
3. Native AI and N/llm consume NetSuite AI Units in 2026.2; the August 2026 minor release removed the old separate usage pools. Ask Oracle is “included with your NetSuite license” but consumes units.
- Allowance: 1,000 units per month of term per “NetSuite General Access Cloud Service User”, provisioned upfront into one shared pool (Oracle’s example: 10 users, 36-month term, 360,000 units). Oracle lists no allowance for other user types, such as Employee Center.
- In practice (our arithmetic from Oracle’s estimates): 1,000 units is about 100 simple Ask Oracle questions at about 10 units each, or 5 to 20 research questions at 50 to 200 each.
- Units expire at term end, and an intensive early pilot can use units meant for later months. When the pool runs out, buy 10,000- or 25,000-unit packs, or pause.
- Sandboxes get their own pool equal to production’s; development environments get 10,000 per month.
- Usage: Setup > Company > View Billing Information. Per-feature estimates: Every AI feature in 2026.2.
Add-on modules (Bill Capture, NetSuite Enterprise Performance Management products, NetSuite Analytics Warehouse) do not consume AI Units.
Where to start with NetSuite AI, by role
NetSuite administrators
A good first answer to your CFO is an inventory, then one controlled pilot:
- See what already runs. Text Enhance and Narrative Insights are on by default and draw AI Units. To turn Text Enhance off, clear Enable Text Enhance on the Text Enhance subtab of Setup > Company > AI > AI Preferences. Usage: Setup > Company > View Billing Information.
- Ask Oracle and NetSuite Next are limited to the US and Canada for now. If your account is in the rollout, grant Ask Oracle per role at Setup > Company > AI > Ask Oracle Access.
- Test NetSuite Next first. Check customizations in a 30-day preview account, then set roles at Setup > Company > AI > NetSuite Next Access: Optional lets users switch between versions, NetSuite Next only switches them at next login. The Redwood Experience theme changes only the look, not the version.
- Know what opens the connector. An admin enables Server SuiteScript, OAuth 2.0 and REST Web Services (required by MCP Standard Tools) at Setup > Company > Enable Features, installs MCP Standard Tools, and gives a role MCP Server Connection and Log in using OAuth 2.0 Access Tokens (plus the REST Web Services permission for the record tools).
- Treat that role as the approval. The first Claude connection creates an integration record that “is enabled automatically regardless of account settings”, so anyone holding the role can connect Claude. Records created automatically for other clients start as pending until an admin enables them.
- Pilot one job in a sandbox with a few named users, a fixed period, a success test and a dedicated non-Administrator role. There is no read-only switch: without REST Web Services, the record tools, including the two that write, disappear. See a least-privilege role for AI and the Standard Tools.
- Protect other integrations. Connector traffic shares your account’s integration concurrency. Set a Concurrency Limit on the AI integration record (Setup > Integration > Manage Integrations).
- Set up auditing. The record’s Execution Log tab, AI Connector Service (MCP) subtab, lists requests (user, method, status; Oracle lists no prompt field) for 21 days in production, 7 in a sandbox. In the current interface, the System Notes “AI Used” column tracks only changes made by AI Connector custom tools.
- Know your kill switches: remove MCP Server Connection from the role, revoke the app at Setup > Users/Roles > OAuth 2.0 Authorized Applications, or disable the integration record. See Governing AI access and, if the connection fails, AI Connector errors.
Preparing for NetSuite Next. Oracle’s deck Get Ready For NetSuite Next lists five ways: practice prompting now through the AI Connector; clean up customizations and workflows; fix duplicate and incomplete customers, vendors and items, active data first; revisit roles and permissions; simplify navigation.
What to tell your CFO (fill in the brackets):
Already running: [Text Enhance, Narrative Insights, ...], metered in AI Units.
Our pool: [units] for the term, [units] used so far (View Billing Information).
Cost lines: AI Connector free; AI Units included, then 10,000- or 25,000-unit packs;
AI client plan [Claude or ChatGPT plan] is the new line.
Pilot: [one job], [named users], [sandbox, or production read-only], [dates].
Controls: dedicated non-Administrator role, [read-only], Execution Log reviewed [how often],
access removed by taking one permission off the role.
We stop if: [answers do not match NetSuite reports / units burn faster than planned / ...].
Finance and operations users
If Ask Oracle is enabled for your role, start there. Otherwise, ask your admin for Claude or ChatGPT through the AI Connector, with a read-only role and the Companion prompt library.
Before trusting a profit and loss (P&L) statement: the report tools ignore accounting periods, so the assistant may assume a calendar year. Give explicit dates and check totals in NetSuite. See Claude and ChatGPT for finance.
Seen in practice: Rand Group finds the connector useful for ad hoc questions and exploration; for final numbers, board decks and audits, it still recommends review, approvals and your standard reports (Rand Group, MCP webinar).
Developers
- Add Oracle’s skills one by one (
npx skills add oracle/netsuite-suitecloud-sdk --skill <skill-name>), or the NetSuite SuiteCloud plug-in. See Oracle’s agent skills. - Give the agent sandbox credentials only.
- Plan the SuiteScript 2.1 migration: Oracle expects to remove support for SuiteScript 1.0, SuiteScript 2.0, and scripts annotated
@NApiVersion 2.0or@NApiVersion 2.xin NetSuite 2028.2. See Migrate to 2.1 with an AI agent. - Build custom MCP tools or N/llm features. Vet third-party options with Community skills and MCP servers.
Decision makers (CFO, controller, IT)
- Access: the connector runs under the user’s role and refuses Administrator. N/llm runs under the script’s role; scheduled and map/reduce jobs started from the NetSuite interface run with administrator permissions. Coding agents deploy with their auth ID’s role.
- Data and compliance: Oracle answers data use feature by feature (native features); through the connector, your AI provider’s policy for your plan applies (governance). Oracle has not assessed these AI features, including the connector, for the U.S. Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
- Deadline: SuiteScript 2.0 and 2.x scripts run as 2.1 by default from 2028.1, and Oracle expects to remove support for SuiteScript 1.0 and 2.0 in 2028.2. If a partner writes your scripts, ask them for a migration plan.

FAQ
Does NetSuite have AI, and AI agents?
Yes: generative features such as Text Enhance and N/llm, AI SuiteApps such as Bill Capture, machine learning, and the AI Connector Service. Ask Oracle works with NetSuite agents and read-only “core skills”. SuiteAgents, for custom agents, were announced in October 2025 but are not publicly documented (agents in 2026.2).
What is the NetSuite AI Connector, and is it “NetSuite MCP”?
The NetSuite AI Connector Service is Oracle’s hosted MCP server for your account: Claude, ChatGPT and other clients use reports, saved searches, records and SuiteQL under your NetSuite role. “NetSuite MCP” usually means this service, not “NetSuite Connector”, Oracle’s ecommerce integration product.
Is the NetSuite AI Connector free?
Yes: Oracle says it is not a paid feature, its SuiteApp is free, and it consumes no AI Units. Your AI client may need a paid plan: Oracle names Claude Pro or higher, although Anthropic allows one custom connector on its Free plan.
Can I turn off NetSuite AI features?
Feature by feature: Oracle has no single account-level switch. Text Enhance and Narrative Insights have boxes at Setup > Company > AI > AI Preferences; Ask Oracle stays off until granted per role; the connector stays closed until a role gets MCP Server Connection. Every switch: how to turn off AI in NetSuite.
Can AI change or delete our NetSuite records?
The connector’s standard tools can create and update records, not delete them, and only where the role allows. Custom tools can do whatever their code does, under the user’s role. Ask Oracle may pause for your approval before a “protected action”, one that can change data.
Can I use Microsoft Copilot or other AI clients with NetSuite?
Oracle says NetSuite “enables any client that supports the MCP protocol” with remote MCP, protocol version 2025-06-18, Streamable HTTP and OAuth 2.0 Authorization Code Grant with PKCE (Proof Key for Code Exchange). Oracle has login-only SuiteAnswers guides for Microsoft Copilot Studio, Codex, Claude Code and Postman.
